Preheat oven to 325°F/163°C. Be sure oven rack is in the center of the oven.
Remove ham from the package and discard the liquid from the packaging. Place the ham cut side down in a large baking dish or roasting pan.
Place cut sweet potatoes in the pan around the ham. Set aside.
In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt 4 Tablespoons of butter.
Stir in ½ cup of maple syrup to the melted butter.
Brush the melted butter syrup on to the spiral ham.
Place the prepared ham into the preheated oven to bake for 1 ½ hours.
When it has 30 minutes left to cook, remove it from the oven. Set aside.
In a small mixing bowl, stir together brown sugar and pecans.
Place this mixture all over the ham. Return the ham back to the oven to finish cooking.
To make the final glaze, In a small saucepan over medium heat combine remaining 4 Tablespoons of butter and the remaining ½ cup of maple syrup.
While whisking, bring this mixture up to a slight bubble and cook for 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat.
Remove ham from the oven and drizzle the ham with the glaze.
Slice and serve.
