In a large skillet combine ground beef and onions. Cook over medium-high heat until meat is browned. Drain and discard excess grease.
To the meat mixture in the pan add Thousand Island dressing, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.
In a small bowl combine cornstarch and beef broth.
Add the broth mixture to the pan over medium-high heat and stir until thickened, about 3-5 minutes.
To serve, place a slice of American cheese on a bottom bun, then add a bit of the meat mixture.
Next, add the bottom bun of another set of buns and then add more meat to the top of that bun.
Add another slice of cheese. Top with shredded lettuce, pickles, and more dressing if you like.
Top with the top of the bun.
