Hawaiian Sweet Rolls Recipe
It has become increasingly important to be able to make some easy bread recipes at home. For a while now, I’ve been baking bread a few times a week. I couldn’t find sweet Hawaiian rolls anywhere in any grocery stores for a few months and it totally bummed us out, especially my kids. They love these rolls for a grab and go snack, with soups, and sliders.
These Hawaiian sweet rolls have always been a favorite of my family and with the current times, I made it a point to rock this recipe. We love these sweet rolls and I think you’ll love them too.
Ingredients
When it comes to baking, we find sticking to the recipe is key. We do use unsalted butter to make these rolls. If you are using salted butter, reduce the salt to ½ teaspoon.
Tips and FAQs
- We use instant yeast in the recipe. If using active dry yeast, let the yeast sit in the liquid ingredients for about 5-6 minutes. (This is explained under Instant Yeast)
- Use room temperature ingredients for the eggs, butter, and buttermilk for best results.
- Use unsalted butter, however, if you have to use salted butter, reduce the salt to ½ teaspoon salt.
- Be precise when measuring the ingredients as baking is not as forgiving as cooking.
- All-purpose flour is the best flour for this recipe.
- Kneading the dough activates the gluten and it is an important part of the process.
- Be sure to give yourself enough time kneading the dough by hand or mixer. Again, activating glutens for soft and fluffy results.
- Be sure to let the dough rise before punching down. This will give height to the bread
- This recipe uses a stand mixer but you can mix by hand and we have included the instructions.
Instant Yeast
We use instant yeast as the particles are tiny and they absorb instantly into the liquid. If using active dry yeast, in Step 2, let the yeast sit in the liquid to expand.
Step by step instructions
- Into the bowl of your stand mix, Combine 3 cups of the flour, brown sugar, salt and instant yeast. Stir well to combine dry ingredients and then make a well in the centre.
- Combine the pineapple juice, buttermilk, and vanilla extract into a bowl. Whisk in 2 of the eggs plus 1 egg yolk, and the butter.
- Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Pour the liquid mix into the center of the well. Place Knead the dough by hand or with an electric mixer until it appears elastic and forms a soft well ball that pulls away from the sides of the bowl, adding up to one cup more flour as needed. It took me about 5 minutes, using the stand mixer. If kneading by hand, it will be more like 8-9 minutes. This is a stickier dough – it will not form the same cohesive ball as a harder, proofed dough. Avoid the temptation to add more than 4-4 ½ cups of flour.)
- Cover the dough with plastic wrap and a clean kitchen towel and place in a warm area of your kitchen to rise for 2 hours. Once risen, punch down the dough and divide into 20 equal balls of dough. Grease a 9” x 13” casserole dish AND a 8” x 8” casserole dish and place the balls of dough equal distance apart in each.
- 5. Once risen, punch down the dough and divide into 20 equal balls of dough. Grease a 9” x 13” casserole dish AND a 8” x 8” casserole dish and place the balls of dough equal distance apart in each.
- Place the plastic wrap and kitchen towel back over the casserole dish and allow to rise again for 1 ½ hours.
- Preheat oven to 350F. Brush the risen rolls with the egg white.
- Bake for 20-24 minutes, until rolls are golden brown on top and cooked through.
- Allow to cool for 2 minutes in the casserole dish before attempting to remove.

Can I freeze them
The rolls can be baked and frozen. Place in freezer safe bags or use a FoodSaver, my favorite, for freezing them without worry of freezer burn. You can prepare the rolls up to the proofing step and store in the refrigerator overnight. The next day, let them come to room temperature before continuing with the recipe.
