How to make Hocus Pocus Brownies

This is an overview of the recipe. The full instructions are below in the recipe card.

Step 1: Heat oven to 350ºF. Lightly spray an 8✕8-inch square metal baking pan with non-stick baking spray. Place a piece of parchment paper in the baking pan.

Step 2: In a medium-sized mixing bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients of flour, cornstarch, baking soda, and salt.

A glass bowl with all purpose flour, baking soda, and cornstarch.

Step 3: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients, sugar, oil, eggs, and vanilla until smooth.

A glass bowl with 3 eggs out of the shell and sugar, not blended together.

The egg mixture should be smooth as pictured below.

A large bowl with melted butter and eggs blended together

Step 4: Add cocoa powder to the egg mixture. Whisk until smooth and glossy, about 1 minute.  Use a spatula to fold the dry ingredients into the egg and cocoa mixture until combined.

A glass bowl with a brown mixture topped with flour and a spoon.

Step 5: Stir in chocolate chips into the brownie batter.  Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan. Bake for 30-35 minutes in the preheated oven. Put a toothpick into the center of the brownies and it should come out clean when baking is complete and the brownies are done baking.

Step 6: Let brownies cool completely. Decorate them with chocolate cookie icing and the jumbo candy eyes.

    Make-ahead, storage, and freezer tips

Keep the brownies in a covered airtight container. If they are not all eaten, they can be kept for up to 3-4 days.

    Eileen's Tips for Success

    • Be sure to let the brownies cool completely before decorating to ensure the chocolate does not melt on the brownies.
    • I find it easiest to slice the brownies and then decorate them.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a boxed brownie mix?

Of course. I will say, this recipe is quick and easy. The chocolate flavor is fabulous and well worth the few extra minutes to make these Halloween brownies from scratch.

    NOTES

Be sure to check the Expert Tips and FAQs above with important tips and questions that can help make a delicious recipe.
Note 1: For easy decorating, we use chocolate icing with a piping tube attached for the chocolate lines. The other option is to use chocolate melting wafers. They can be melted in the microwave and placed into a piping bag for decorating the brownies.
Be sure to check Expert Tips and FAQs above with important tips and questions that can help make a delicious recipe.
Tip: Be sure to let the brownies completely cool before decorating. Otherwise, the chocolate will run and melt into the brownies.
    Decorating:
    • Slice the brownies into 9 pieces. Drop a dot of black icing onto each brownie. Secure a candy eye to each spot.
    • Based on your decorating preference, draw a chocolate line around each eye in the shape of a circle or diamond.
    • Along one side of the brownie piece, draw a straight line with the chocolate and then a squiggly line next to it.
    • Use our brownie decorations above to make your decorations.
Storage: Keep the brownies in a covered airtight container. If they are not all eaten, they can be kept for up to 3-4 days.
