    Instructions

This is an overview of the recipe. The full instructions are below in the recipe card.

Step by step with text overlay to make air fryer cheese stuffed onion rings.
    1. Slice onion horizontally into 1 ½-inch-thick slices. Using the widest rings first, separate the layers. Pair every other layer of the onion. You want an onion layer-sized space between rings. (Save remaining smaller onion slices for compost or freeze for soups)
    2. Slice the brick of cheese into ⅛-inch-thick slices, then cut the slices to match the height of the onion ring.
    3. Place the slices of cheese between the rings filling the void. You may need to slice smaller pieces of cheese to fill any gaps.
    4. In one shallow dish, mix the cornstarch, flour, and spices. Add water until the mixture resembles a thick batter.
    5. In another shallow dish, add the crumbs.
    6. Dredge the assembled rings carefully through the batter. Be sure to fully coat the rings.
    7. Then place the coated rings in the panko crumbs fully coating. Fill any space not coated with crumbs. It’s best to coat the assembled ring one or two at a time.
    8. Place the coated ring in your oil-sprayed air fryer basket. Spray the top of the rings with olive oil spray.
    9. Cook at 400°F/205°C for 15 minutes. Flip gently halfway through cooking.
    10. While the onion rings are cooking, make the dipping sauce. In a medium sized mixing bowl, mix the mayonnaise, chili sauce, and minced garlic in a bowl for the dipping sauce.
    11. Serve the cheese stuffed onion rings with the dipping sauce.

    Storage

These onion rings are best enjoyed fresh but will keep in an airtight covered container for 2-3 days.

Reheat onion rings in the air fryer at 350°F for 2 to 4 minutes or until crispy again.

    Expert Tips

Expert Tip: Be careful to not overfill your air fryer. You want your cheesy onion rings in a single layer in your air fryer basket.

    • I served these with a sweet chili dipping sauce, but you can also serve them with your favorite dipping sauce.
    • I recommend sweet onion for this recipe, but you can also use yellow onions for this tasty snack.

Air-fried onion rings will take about 15 minutes in an air fryer.

It is not necessary to flip your onion rings while cooking. However, flipping them halfway through will help ensure they are cooked evenly.

I recommend air frying onion rings at 400 degrees so that they crisp up nicely.
