    Stovetop Instructions

    4. Let the mixture simmer for about 5-6 minutes. The broth will thicken slightly.

    Make-ahead, storage, and freezer tips

Leftovers can be stored in a covered airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. I don't recommend freezing with the cheese added, as the cheese may not freeze well.

You can freeze the cooked ground beef and then add the cheese after defrosting.

Reheat in a skillet over medium heat until warmed through. You can also reheat these in the microwave, but I find they are better reheated on the stovetop.

    Eileen's Tips for Success

    • Make Ahead: The ingredients can be made ahead of time. After everything is browned, combine the prepared ingredients into a freezer-safe bag. The mixture can be kept frozen for 3 months.
    • Be sure to dice the vegetables to be the same size so they cook evenly.

    Variations

    • Seasonings: For a little extra flavor, add ¼ cup of BBQ sauce to the beef mixture.
    • Creaminess: For a creamier sauce, add ¼ cup of sour cream to the beef mixture.
    • Meat Options: You can use ground turkey or ground chicken instead of beef if you prefer to make this tasty Philly cheesesteak sloppy joe recipe.
    • Buns: Serve these Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes on a toasted bun, brioche buns, or hot dog buns.
    • Vegetables: If you don't have fresh mushrooms, canned mushrooms can be used.
      • White mushrooms or baby bellas are my first choice for mushrooms.
    • Cheese: If you don't have provolone cheese, use either mozzarella cheese or white American cheese.
    • Cheez Whiz is always an option for a classic sauce for cheesesteak sloppy joes.
