    Expert Tips

Expert Tip: Cut the butter into small chunks and place it in the freezer for 10-15 minutes before using. This will help keep the butter from getting too melty when you mix everything together.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between cake flour and all-purpose flour?

Cake flour is a type of flour that has a lower protein content than all-purpose flour. It is often used in recipes for baked goods that are delicate or require a softer texture, such as cakes, cupcakes, and certain types of cookies.

Can I use all-purpose flour instead of cake flour?

Yes, you can substitute all-purpose flour for cake flour in this recipe. However, your cookies may not be as light and fluffy as they would be if you used cake flour.
You can use our homemade cake flour substitute recipe to make it yourself too.

I don't have a stand mixer, can I make these cookies without one?

Yes, you can make these cookies without a stand mixer. Just use a large mixing bowl and an electric hand mixer with the whisk attachment.

    Variations

    • Add ½ cup of peanut butter or another type of nut butter to the dough for a delicious twist.
    • Swap out the semi-sweet chocolate chips for milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or white chocolate chips.
    • Skip the walnuts and add in pecans, almonds, or another type of nut.
    • For a fun festive twist, add in ½ cup of red and green M&M's candies.
    • If you don't have cornstarch on hand, you can use an equal amount of arrowroot powder or tapioca flour.
    • For a chewy cookie, bake for 9-10 minutes. For a crispier cookie, bake for 8-9 minutes.
