Two photos with text overlay of instructions to make homemade guacamole.
  1. In a small mixing bowl, add the lime juice, jalapeno, red onion, and minced garlic. Let the flavors blend while mashing the avocados. Set aside.
  2. Slice the avocado in half. Remove the avocado pits and discard. Remove the avocado halves from the skin. Discard the skin and place the avocado halves into a medium-sized mixing bowl.
  3. Use a potato masher or fork to smash the avocados in the bowl until the texture of the avocado flesh is to your preference, either slightly chunky or mash a bit more for a smooth and creamy texture.
  4. Mix the lime juice mixture into the smashed avocado. Stir in the black pepper, salt, and cumin to the guacamole.
  5. Taste for seasoning, if needed adjust any spices.

Storage

Serving guacamole as soon as you make it is best. It can be made slightly ahead of time and stored in a covered airtight container for one day.

It is best to place a layer of plastic wrap directly on the guacamole to keep it from browning.

Expert Tips

Expert Tip: Add the jalapeno, red onion, and garlic to the lime juice to allow the flavors to release in the lime juice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I pick a ripe avocado?

Check the stem. When you pick it off and the underneath is green, your avocado is ripe.

How far in advance can I make guacamole?

It is best to make your guacamole as close to the time of serving as possible to keep it as green and fresh as possible.

How can I keep guacamole green overnight?

The best way to keep the guacamole from browning is to place the dip into a bowl and press it in to compact it. Then sprinkle citrus, preferably lime over the top and press a piece of plastic wrap on the dip, squeezing out any air bubbles.

Variations

Our version is a classic recipe but you can add so many things such as fresh cilantro, chopped and seeded tomatoes, yellow onions, or chopped bacon.

Some like to add a bit of lemon juice and experiment with flavors.
