  •  salt

Boiling Water

  • 8 cups water
  • 1 Tablespoon baking soda

Equipment

  • large mixing bowl
  • damp towel
  • large stockpot
  • air fryer
  • pastry brush

Instructions

This is an overview of the recipe. The full instructions are below in the recipe card.

How to make the egg wash

In a small bowl whisk together the egg and water until well combined. Set aside.

How to make bagels in the air fryer

Step 1. In a large mixing bowl, add the sugar, yeast, and water. Stir and let sit for 10 minutes. Frothy bubbles will form as the yeast blooms.

Step 2. To the yeast mixture, add all-purpose flour and salt. Stir lightly for 1 minute

Step 3. Use your hands and lightly knead the dough. Roll the dough into itself and place it in an oiled bowl.

Step 4. Cover the bowl with a damp towel. Let dough rise for 1 hour, it will double in size.

Step 5. Once the dough is doubled in size cut them into 8 equal pieces. On a lightly floured surface, form each dough into a ball by tucking in the edges of the cuts and rounding them out on a flat surface.

Step 6. Using your floured thumb and middle finger, create a hole in the center of the bagel, and then lightly stretch the hole open about an inch

Step 7. Over medium/high heat, bring a large stockpot of water and baking soda to boiling, then reduce the heat to low. Place each bagel in the hot water to bath for 1-2 minutes on each side. The longer the bagel soaks, the chewier the results.

Step 8. Remove the bagels from the hot water bath. Use a pastry brush to brush bagels with the egg wash. Season the bagels with 1 Tablespoon each of Everything Bagel Seasoning or toppings of your choice.

Step 9. Spray the air fryer basket with oil. Place basket in the air fryer.

Step 10. Air fry at 350°F for about 10 minutes. Bagels will be golden brown and ready to eat.

Storage

These bagels can be stored in an airtight container or a ziplock bag for up to 3 days.

Freezer Instructions: The bagels can be frozen for up to 3 months in a freezer-safe bag. Be sure all the air has been pushed out of the bag before sealing.

Expert Tips

Expert Tip: For a denser and chewier bagel, let the dough rise for an additional 30 minutes.

  • Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may be able to fit 2-3 bagels per batch into the air fryer basket.
  • Be sure the bagels are not touching and they are in a single layer in the basket.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I freeze air fryer bagels?

Yes, absolutely! You can freeze these bagels for up to 2 months.

Can I reheat bagels in the air fryer?

Reheat frozen bagels in the air fryer at 350°F for 10 minutes.

Why are my bagels soggy?

If your bagels are soggy it is likely because it wasn't boiled long enough.

Can I toast bagels in an air fryer?

I have an air fryer with a toast option so it is easy to slice the bagels in half and toast them.
If you have a basket-type air fryer, slice the bagel in half and cook at 375°F for about 3-4 minutes until toasted.

Variations

  • Use a gluten-free flour blend such as Bob’s Red Mill 1-to-1 Gluten-Free Baking Flour.
  • Add an extra 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar for a sweeter bagel.
  • Change up the flavors by adding granulated onion or granulated garlic to your bagel dough.
  • Some other topping ideas are poppy seeds and sesame seeds.
  • Stir in cinnamon and raisins to make cinnamon raisin bagels.
  • Don't forget a plain bagel is also absolutely delicious bagels.
  • If you do not have an air fryer you can use a toaster oven or a regular oven to complete the bagels.
