Instructions
This is an overview of the recipe. The full instructions are below in the recipe card.
- Divide the ground beef into 3 even amounts. Mold and flatten into a patty. Make sure the center of each patty is thinner than the edge portion. This will allow for an even cook and maintain the size proportions as it cooks.
- Season the patties evenly on both sides with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
- Place the burgers in the air fryer basket. I like to line my air fryer with aluminum for easy clean-up as well as keeping the Patties in the juices.
- Cook at 350°F for 5 minutes, flip the burgers and cook an additional 5 minutes for a medium well hamburger. Longer or shorter than 2 minutes for the desired cook.
- For air fryer cheeseburgers, after cooking for 5 minutes, flip the burgers and cook for an additional 4 minutes. Then top each burger with cheese and cook for an additional minute.
- To assemble, open the bun and place the patty on the bottom bun with lettuce, tomato, onion, and Thousand Island dressing, and add the top bun.
- Serve and enjoy.
Storage
Air Fried burgers are best fresh and served immediately. However, if you have leftovers, they will keep in a covered airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Reheat in the air fryer at 350°F for 2-3 minutes until warmed through. You can also reheat the burgers in the microwave for 30-60 seconds.
Expert Tips
Expert Tip: For easy clean-up, line the air fryer with aluminum foil or parchment paper which will also keep the burgers cooking in the juices.
- It is recommended to use an instant-read meat thermometer and the internal temperature of a cooked hamburger should be 160°F/71°C.
- I recommend using fattier meat, because it helps to keep the burgers together, and helps them retain more moisture.
- Don't forget the thumbprint in the center patty. This will help them cook evenly and prevent them from shrinking.
- If you want to prevent your patties from drying out when you reheat them try reheating them in a skillet with a lid on the stovetop with a few tablespoons of water. Reheating this way will add some moisture back to your burgers preventing them from drying out.
Frequently Asked Questions
Cooking time will depend on the thickness of your burger. For a 1-inch thick burger, cook for 5 minutes, flip, and then cook for an additional 5 minutes.
Burgers should cook at 350F/182°C in the air fryer.
Yes, you will need to flip the burgers during cooking. I recommend using tongs or a spatula for flipping so you don't puncture the burger and let all the juices out.
Variations
- For extra flavor, try adding some BBQ sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, or mustard to the burgers before cooking.
- If you like spicy air fryer hamburgers you can season them with some Cajun seasoning, chili powder, onion powder, or even add some diced jalapeños to the mix.
- Try adding some crumbled bacon, sautéed mushrooms, or caramelized onions to the burgers.
- For a healthier option, use ground turkey or chicken instead of ground beef.
- You could also make sliders in the air fryer by dividing the ground beef into 12 small patties instead of 3 large ones.
